The Big Picture

Definition: Biodiversity is a concept that identifies not only the variety of biological life on earth, but its interdependence, connections, and functions. It represents the multitudes of divergent paths that life has taken freely under the law of evolution. All living things depend on other living things, so the more living things the more successful an ecosystem is.

Simply put, Biodiversity is life itself. Life has inherent value beyond our understanding and is necessary for the survival of humanity as we know it (assuming that we don’t colonize another planet). Is that important? I would say so. However, the state of decline in biodiversity levels worldwide at 1000x pre-human levels would indicate that it’s not as widely understood as well as it should be. To be clear, in most cases when biodiversity is lost, it is hard if not impossible to regain. Retaining and promoting it where it exists is the most practical and economical, and it is important to recognize the battle is not lost.
